A THREE-CASE LACQUER INRO
edo period (19th century), signed kajikawa saku and with red jar seal

Of rectangular shape decorated on a kinji ground with an inlaid soft-metal plate cast with an oxherd dozing atop his ox, the circular plate ringed with a narrow band of mother-of-pearl, designed below and on the reverse in gold takamaki-e and inlaid mother-of-pearl and ivory with a snail climbing over a leafy stalk, the snail's shell of clear lacquer applied over gold foil, interior cases nashiji; with an amber bead ojime and an ivory kagamibuta netsuke fitted with an identical soft-metal plate of the sleeping oxherd--2½in. (6.2cm.) high
