A FIVE-CASE LACQUER INRO
edo-meiji periods (mid-late 19th century)

Of oval section decorated in gold takamaki-e, hiramaki-e, hirame, nashiji, kirigane and inlays of mother-of-pearl, horn, and colored ivory with a scene of Kosagi, one of the Japanese paragons of filial piety, filling a gourd from Yoro waterfall, turned miraculously to sake by the gods, the reverse with two monkeys observing, carrying three gourds suspended from a stick, interior cases nashiji; fitted with a soft metal ojime cast with gilt orchids and an ivory netsuke carved as Daikoku beside a stack of rice bales, holding an abacus--3 7/8in. (10cm.) high
