Of rectangular shape decorated in iro-e takamaki-e on a kinji ground with a scene from Shitakirisuzume (The Tongue-cut Sparrow), one side with an elderly man drinking wine in the company of three elegantly attired sparrows beneath flowering cherry, the reverse with two sparrows dancing to the accompaniment of a third playing the koto, interior cases nashiji; fitted with a coral bead ojime and a wood netsuke carved as an aubergine and leafy stem--3¼in. (8.3cm.) high
