Formed as a ball and top on a small stand, the axis of the top the removable writing brush, the ball hollow and enclosing a removable tray fitted with a silver brushwasher and an inkwell, the top lacquered in alternating bands of red and gold on a roiro ground, the ends nashiji, the ball with red lacquer ground crisscrossed with stripes of hold and silver hiramaki-e imitating string, the interior of the ball fundame, the toys resting on a gyobu stand designed around the sides with a gold lacquer foliate scroll, nashiji base--4½in. (10.2cm.) long, 3in. (7.6cm.) high
