Decorated on the exterior of the slanted sides with a frieze of butterflies on a ground of gold and red lacquer, the outlines of which are etched and colored in gold and silver lacquer, all below an undulating band of waves etched in green lacquer sprinkled with gold powder, the lid of the box carved with chrysanthemums of gold lacquer within a marbleized red and gold lacquer border, the interior and base of the box roiro sprinkled with nashiji, gold and minute pieces of aogai (mijingai-nuri)--4¾ x 3½ x 1 5/8in.
