Of quatrefoil section contained within a slightly larger quatrefoil case pierced on the four sides with large rectangular apertures, the food container of five tiers set on a tall foot of brownish-black lacquer patterned with gold hiramaki-e scrollwork and fitted on each side with silver-lined cord runners, the box decorated on the exterior with scholars engaged in a various pastimes in a spring landscape in lustrous gold hiramaki-e, gold and silver togidashi and with various embellishments on a mura-nashiji ground, the interior nashiji; the outer frame black lacquer with floral roundels in gold hiramaki-e against cross-hatched lines of gold togidashi accented by nashiji, inner edges of apertures gyobu, interior nashiji, fittings and corner mounts silver--7 3/8 x 7 3/8 x 10 5/8in.
