Of circular shape with flat cover decorated in eggshell and gold lacquer and shaped pieces of aogai with maidenflowers (ominaeshi) on a roiro-nuri ground, the interior and the recessed base roiro, signed in red lacquer on the recessed base, in wood tomobako signed Koichi and sealed Koichi --2 1/8in. (5.3cm.) high, 3¼in. (8.2cm.) diameter

Lot Essay

The white of cracked eggshell creates a vivid contrast to the glossy black ground of this tea caddy. As in lot 235, the artist uses color in a bold and innovative manner, exploiting the rich, jewel-like hues of mother-of-pearl inlay and shiny gold leaf.
