A SANCAI-GLAZED POTTERY TRIPOD DISH
TANG DYNASTY

The shallow dish with rounded sides flaring to a slightly lipped rim, the interior stamped with a design of a central green flowerhead encircled by a band of alternating green and cream leaves, reserved on an amber ground within a band of green petals forming a larger flowerhead, each petal enclosing a cream and amber bud and separated by an amber stem rising to a cream and amber lotus leaf reserved on a green and cream resist ground further reserved on a yellowish amber ground which continues onto the exterior where it falls short of the three similarly glazed feet

A tripod offering dish with a very similar stamped floral medallion and dappled well, but with the addition of a resist-glazed chevron band at the rim, is illustrated in Tang Sancai, Heibonsha series, Japan, 1977, no. 56

The result of Oxford thermoluminescence test no. 866b76 is consistent with the dating of this lot
