A SMALL CARVED LONGQUAN CELADON BARREL-FORM GARDEN STOOL
MING DYNASTY, 15TH/16TH CENTURY

Well potted, the slightly domed seat carved with a diaper pattern above a foliate band encircling the sides and a narrow grooved border applied with florettes at the lower edge, this latter border repeated on the body below four large panels carved with flower sprays and above the band of upright, overlapping leaf tips rising from the base, all under a glaze of sea-green tone, the interior similarly glazed

Compare the similar Longquan celadon garden stool in the Museum of Decorative Art, Copenhagen, included in the exhibition, Kinesisk Kunst, Copenhagen, Denmark, 1959 and illustrated in the Catalogue, no. 100, where the author, Andre Leith, notes that the stool had been brought back from Java where great quantities of celadon and blue and white porcelain were exported during the Ming period
