A RARE PAIR OF DATED PERSIMMON-RED BOWLS
YONGZHENG YUANNIAN JIANZHI SIX-CHARACTER MARKS, CORRESPONDING TO 1723, IN UNDERGLAZE BLUE WITHIN A DOUBLE CIRCLE AND OF THE PERIOD

Each with deep rounded sides, the exterior covered with a finely mottled reddish-orange glaze with soft, somewhat lustrous, matte surface, interior glazed white

Lot Essay

The mark may be translated, "Made for inspection in the first year of Yongzheng", corresponding to 1723. This unusual mark raises the question of whether these bowls may have been made as a trial run, or have been part of a series of attempts to produce a particular color, or shape, or both
