It is rare to find panther badges in pairs, particularly attached to a coat. Stylistically, this badge would appear to date from 1850-75. For a similar embroidered panther badge, of earlier date (circa 1820), see the exhibition, The Badge of Rank, Linda Wrigglesworth, London, April 19-May 13, 1990, Catalogue, no. 38. Other pairs of panther badges were included in The Badge of Rank II, Linda Wrigglesworth, London, November 27-December 20, 1991, Catalogue, nos. 32 and 33 (kesi examples) and nos. 46 and 47 (examples primarily in couched gold threads)
