Lot Essay

A number of these red pottery figures have been found in cliff burials in Sichuan province, although representations of horses are relatively uncommon. It is particularly rare to have a horse standing foursquare, such as the present example, rather than in a prancing pose

See Kaogu xuebao, 1958, no. 1, p. 100 and pl. IX:3 for a prancing horse measuring 114cm. in height found at Tianhuishan, Chengdu. Refer, also, to Wenwu ziliao congkan, no. 9, 1985, pl. VI:5, for another example of a prancing horse discovered in a cliff burial (no. 13) at Majiashan, Xinduxian, Sichuan

The result of Oxford thermoluminescence test no. 766a55 is consistent with the dating of this lot
