TWO SMALL JADE ANIMAL CARVINGS
TANG/SONG DYNASTY

One a mottled pale grayish-green figure of a recumbent dog shown with head resting on its extended front paws, its thin body with pronounced backbone and ribs and the tail coiled onto the left rear haunch, the stone with some russet and black mottling; the other depicting two seated monkeys huddled together, side-by-side, drilled for suspension, the stone now opaque and of mottled gray color

Lot Essay

A similar dog with outstretched paws from the collection of Dr. Paul Singer, dated to the Song dynasty or earlier, was included in the O.C.S. exhibition, Chinese Jade throughout the Ages, Victoria and Albert Museum, May 1-June 22, 1975, and illustrated by Jessica Rawson in the Catalogue, no. 245
