A RARE LONGQUAN CELADON CARVED FLUTED BOWL
YUAN DYNASTY

The heavily potted bowl with deep, rounded sides rising to a barbed rim, freely carved on the interior with entwined lotus scroll surrounding a central roundel of trellis pattern within a shaped cartouche, the exterior with a continuous, stylized landscape of three groups of three mountain peaks dotted with trees rising from a ground of undulating waves with combed details, all below a band of stylized scroll within triple line borders below the shaped rim, applied with a rich olive-green glaze darkening in the recesses to enhance the design, and continuing over the foot leaving an unglazed footring on the base burnt reddish-orange in the firing

A slightly smaller bowl in the Percival David Collection, differing only in the treatment of the band on the wavy rim, which is incised with a chevron design reminiscent of mountain peaks, published by Margaret Medley, Illustrated Catalogue Of Celadon Wares, London, 1977, pl. X, no. 101
