Lot Essay

These vases are based on a design by Gerard-Jean Galle for a vase exhibited with a surtout-de-table in the 1819 Exhibition de l'Industrie in Paris. Galle's designed were engraved by J.V. de Moleon in his Description des produits de l'industrie française depuis leur origine jusqu'a celle de 1819 inclusivement, Paris, 1824 (see H. Ottomeyer and P. Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, 1986, vol. II, p. 711, fig. 30). Other related vases of this form were sold in these rooms, 1 November 1989, lot 47 and Christie's London, 26 November 1996, lots 2-3.
