The arched grooved back rail carved with a Russian saying 'The slower you go the further you get' above a panelled seat carved at the back with woven moccasins on a stylized linen cloth, flanked by axe-form arm-supports, on splayed legs

Lot Essay

This chair belongs to a group of seating furniture executed in the 1870-1880's by the artist carver Vasilii Petrovich Shutov. A very similar chair but with carved mittens on the seat, once in the collection of Czar Alexander III and is now at the Hermitage, St. Petersberg, illustrated in Russian Furniture in the Collection of the Hermitage, 1973, p. 90.
