The associated circular specimen marble top above a pierced scroll edge and a frieze drawer, on a fluted and foliate-carved stem with a circular stepped base, square plinth and later paw-feet, with a paper label engraved Mrs. W. Vanderbilt/New York and inscribed TO GO NEXT TO PRESENT FROM PRINCIPESSA TORLONIA/GREEN DRAWING ROOM/RH223 and checked at The City, with another partially torn label printed MAPLES DEPOSITORY with a third paper label inscribed 14

The label on this gueridon probably refers either to the first wife of William Kissam I Vanderbilt, Alva Smith, whom he married in 1874 and divorced in 1895, or the second Mrs W. Vanderbilt, Anne Harriman Sand Rutherfurd, whom he married in 1903
