PROPERTY OF A NEW YORK COLLECTOR
The Biedermeier era was a period of tranquility following the Napoleonic Wars, and the artistic style of furniture which emerged in postwar Austria and Germany displays the fertile mind of the cabinetmaker intent on creating attractively veneered household furniture for a newly prosperous bourgeoisie. The collection of Biedermeier furniture offered here includes fine examples of the functional simplicity and elegant designs for which the style is prized. Several pieces appear of the dust jacket photograph of Biedermeier (Abbeville Press, 1987) by Angus Wilkie. This group of furniture (lots 162-180) has remained in private hands since the early 1980's, and its appearance on the market is a unique opportunity for the Biedermeier collector to purchase items which have enjoyed a certain literary renown.
