REVIVALIST ENAMEL LOCKET PENDANT
Designed as a multicolored enamel miniature depicting a classical female figure within a yellow gold bead and wirework frame (discoloration evident), attributed to Eugene Fontenay, in a fitted case
Eugene Fontenay (1823-1887) was one of the most knowledgable craftsmen in France during the Second Empire (last half of the nintenth century). At the same time as Castellani's house in Italy, he produced jewelry of antique and classical themes using pearls, lapis lazuli, coral and other important materials. He was also very interested in the art of enameling and it's rediscovery lost since the 16th and 17th centuries. In collaboration with Eugene Richet, a painter and miniaturist, he made a series of jewels with an unusual matte finish enamel apparently imitating Roman wall paintings and depicting Greek mythology personages.
