The period at the turn-of-the-century was known as the Belle Epoque, the Beautiful Epoch, when ladies wore sumptuous gowns, accessorized with diamond jewelry, set into platinum. The dominant shapes of bowknots, tassels and swags of this period were based on styles popularized during the reigns of the French kings, Louis XIV, XV and XVI. The illustrated necklace descends from this great tradition of "elegant" jewelry. The design is an updated version of the swag necklaces from the turn-of-the-century and, like them, graces the neckline like a collar. In the intervening years, many developments in diamond cutting have occurred, including the modern brilliant cut which emphasized the diamond's sparkle. On this necklace, the combination of pear, baguette and circular-cut stones dictates the design, which is a direct descendant of Eighteenth Century France, and creates a stunning jewel.
