Lot Essay

Blue and yellow were the racing colours of the Rothschilds. H.C. Bainbridge in his memoirs, Twice Seven (London, 1934), relates that James de Rothschild, on his marriage, ordered various objects from Fabergé including a nephrite cane handle, but this was considered too extravagant for Ascot and Longchamp.
