Complete boxed game with folding board in four sections (style I), four painted lead figures (Peter Rabbit, Squirrel Nutkin, Jeremy Fisher and Jemima Puddleduck), cardboard dice cup and wooden die. 29¼ x 20 3/8 in., printed rules on board verso, board a little bowed; original box with upper cover label, worn (cover heavily rubbed, some splits and repairs).
"In 1904, Beatrix Potter put forward the idea of producing a boardgame based on two of her most famous characters, Peter Rabbit and Mr. McGregor. She had prepared a set of rules and requested that two little wooden figures of these characters be made. After the game had been tried out, the rules were thought to be too difficult for children, but Miss Potter perservered and revised them. Miss Potter and Warnes agreed to leave the game until more of her books had been published. It was not until 1917 that Mary Warne, wife of Fruing Warne, and her son designed a fresh game...Beatrix Potter agreed to have this published and it came on the market in 1920 at 5 shillings and 7 shillings and sixpence."--Brian Love, Great Board Games (New York, 1979), p. 10.
