Inscribed by Potter in pencil at lower left: "Camfield Beauty. '79"; and additionally on verso (in pencil): "At Camfield. Given to Miss Hammond. '79."
Drawn at the age of 13, this watercolor study was presented to Miss Hammond, Beatrix's governess, "who happily allocated a generous portion of the timetable to art... By the time she was 12 and Bertram had joined her in the classroom, Beatrix was showing enough talent to have special instruction from a drawing teacher, and Miss Cameron taught Beatrix for the next five years.
