POTTER, BEATRIX. Flower study. 1886. Original watercolor drawing. 278 x 380 mm. (11 x 15 in.), two small holes at right, some soiling and surface creasing. Signed and dated at lower left ("H.B.P. 1886"). Additionally inscribed by Potter on verso (in pencil): "At Camfield Given to Miss Hammond. '87 Helen Beatrix Potter."
Beatrix was twenty when she painted this floral study. The subject is treated with more subtlety and less emphasis on outline as in her earlier botanical studies (see lots #). This work was presented to Beatrix's governess, Miss Hammond, who encouraged Beatrix's artistic endeavors in her youth (see lot #, also presented to Miss Hammond).
