Weston Naef, Curator of Photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum and a co-author of Of Paris and New York says of this image: Instinct and good luck were Kertész's most powerful creative forces. Here he appropriates the bird's-eye viewpoint favored by topographical photographers of the last century in order to harness the powerful geometries of the vernacular farm buildings. We see manifested for the first time his strategy of waiting patiently, like a hunter stalking game, for figures to take their proper places in the visual "trap" he has set for them. (Naef, André Kertész: Photographs from the J. Paul Getty Museum, pl. 4, p. 16).
