Lot Essay

Paul Dermée and Michel Seuphor were two of the founders of the arts journal, L'Esprit Nouveau. A poet, Dadaist and proto-Surrealist, Dermée had, unbeknownst to Kertész, penned the poem that appeared on the announcement for Slivinsky's Sacre du Printemps exhibition (see frontispiece). (c.f., Phillips, et al., Of Paris and New York, p. 264, cat. no. 52, note).
