A MOULDED IMARI JAR AND COVER
edo period (early 19th century)

Of ovoid form with upright neck surmounted by a domed cover applied with an elaborate plum-tree finial, moulded in relief with three large panels of peonies, flowering plums and chrysanthemums, some of the blossoms and added bamboo, birds and butterflies painted in iron-red and gilt, the vase further decorated between the panels with peony scroll in iron-red, gilt and underglaze-blue, the neck painted with a band of plum scroll and the foot with a band of iron-red clouds, the cover moulded with smaller lotiform reserves of flowers similar to the body and the ground decoration matching, the jar and cover also glazed white--19 7/8in. (50.5cm.) high
