AN EARTHENWARE VASE
meiji period (late 19th century), signed kyoto sozan

Of tapering quadrangular form with flat shoulder and short neck, decorated in gilt and colored enamels with four reserves set within borders of gilt foliate and geometric scroll, two illustrated with court ladies and children on verandas overlooking summer and autumn landscapes, and two with herons, bamboo and birds perched on a blossoming cherry, the shoulder painted with an elaborate brocade pattern on a background of chrysanthemum blossoms within a border of gilt foliate scroll, the neck encircled by lappets panels of gilded geometric patterns, the base and top edge of each side decorated with a band of chrysanthemum scroll, signed in gilt on the recessed base--11½in. (29.3cm.) high
