Uemura Shoen was born in Kyoto and studied at the Kyoto Prefectural School of Painting with Suzuki Shonen (1849-1918), and later with Takeuchi Seiho (1864-1942) and Kono Bairei (1844-1895).
The first woman to receive the Order of Cultural Merit, Uemura Shoen was a frequent prize winner at Bunten exhibitions, a member of the Japan Art Academy and of the Art Committee of the Imperial Household. Her subjects were often graceful women or historical figures painted in the refined and elegant manner exemplary of modern artists working in the traditional Japanese style.
