Born in Kyoto, Kitazawa decided to become a painter while still a child at the time of her father's death. In 1923 she began study with Uemura Shoen (1875-1949), see lot 34. She won an award for her painting entered in the first Kaiso Teiten (the reorganized Teiten) exhibition in 1936 , followed by another prize at the 25th Inten exhibit in 1938. Kitazawa became an Inten member in 1941 with the distinction of being the second woman to gain admission to that society, and she was further honored by becoming a trustee of the organization in 1961. In 1970 she won the Prime Minister Award and in 1980 the Minister of Education Prize. She lived most of her adult life, from 1945 to 1980, in Tokyo where she produced her finest work.
