Lot Essay

Responding to the extreme reduction of artistic manipulation of the Mono-ha movement in the 1970s, Kawamata's intensely interactive works of the late 1970s and 1980s address concepts of order and chaos. From his large-scale works that envelop buildings with derelict lumber to more intimate interior constructions, Kawamata challenges the notion of stability by confronting the viewer with ordinary materials used in an extraordinary fashion. The piece offered here is an annotated model for an interior construction.
