Chassis No. 118S*010007
Engine No. 3689
Red with white interior.
Engine: four cylinder, 1,600cc, 95bhp at 6,000rpm; Gearbox: four speed manual; Suspension: independent all round; Brakes: front, hydraulic, rear, drum. Left hand drive.
Abarth and Co. of Turin, Italy was established in 1949 by Carlo Abarth, who had previously been a motorcycle and race car driver. Just prior to setting up his own company, he had been working with the Cisitalia team of Piero Dusio. Abarth had a very close association with Fiat, who generally supplied body shells to be modified, although bodies also came from Pinninfarina, Bertone and of course, Allemano. The 1600 first appeared at the Turin Automobile Show of 1960.
Abarth is believed to have produced very few of this particular model. According to the Abarth buyers guide, they may have all been show cars. This 2000 lb. car was powered by an Abarth modified 1600 Fiat motor, along with a Fiat 4-speed gearbox. A single Weber DCL03 carburettor was used to boost power to 95 bhp.
Serial No. 118S*010007 was believed to have been sold by its original owner, a medical student from Brooklyn, New York in 1963 to Mr. R. Schwartz of North Merrick, New York. Having used the car only sparingly over the next 25 years, it then traded hands three times in 1988-89, the last time at a cost of $20,500 in unrestored condition.
Restoration of the body was completed over the next few years as were the suspension, brakes, steering, electrical and exterior trim. The bumpers and grille surround have been re-chromed. The engine has been apart but it has been reassembled for ease of transporting. At this time it is not running. A checklist has been provided to show engine work that was accomplished and what engine work still needs to be completed. The transmission has not been apart.
The entire boot and bonnet trim has been refitted and shows very nice period detailing. At this time, the original interior and top have been provided and appears substantially complete. The new owner will need to undertake interior retrimming. Some spare parts are also included with this lot. On completion of this restoration, the new owner will be able to enjoy an exciting and rare classic thoroughbred Italian sports car.
