Lot Essay

These chairs relate closely to some of the documented work of Thomas Chippendale (d.1779). The pierced wheel back features on a suite of painted chairs supplied by Chippendale for Paxton House in Scotland in 1774 (see C.Gilbert, The Life and Works of Thomas Chippendale, 1978, vol.II, p.100, fig.164). The overall form with molded frame and fan-incised legs in the French manner relates to a suite commissioned by David Garrick for his villa in Hampton in 1768. The suite was part of the collection formed by Viscount Rothermere (d.1978) at Daylesford House, Worcester and was sold in these Rooms on behalf of Mary, Viscountess Rothermere, 16 April 1994, lots 142-143.
