Lot Essay

This desk is after a model supplied to Mereworth Castle, Kent which was sold by Christie's London, 23 May 1968, lot 119 and now belongs to the Bank of England (C. Claxton-Stevens and S. Whittington, 18th Century English Furniture: The Norman Adams Collection, 1983, p. 113). Thomas Sheraton published a design for a 'Library table' of similar form but with writing supports to each end in his Drawing Book of 1793, pl. 30.
