Lot Essay

A set of three more open appliques were sold from Burghley House, Sotheby's London, 20 November 1994, lot 87. They relate very closely to an applique in the center of the headboard of the bed carved by James Cullen and supplied by Samuel Norman in 1768 to the Earl of Hopetoun (A. Coleridge, Chippendale Furniture, London, 1968, pl. 413)
