Lot Essay

These bird pictures are from Samuel Dixon's 1750 series of 'Foreign Birds', although the Chinese cock and hen pheasant perched together may be by Dixon's English imitator, Isaac Spackman. The signature James on the reverse of one picture is that of Dixon's apprentice James Reilly.
Like all of Dixon's birds, these are taken with more or less color accuracy from George Edwards' Natural History of Uncommon Birds, 1743-51.
