Alfred Gatley trained at the Royal Academy Schools and was awarded a silver medal there in 1839. A frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy from 1841 to 1853, his bust of Hebe was exhibited at Burlington House in 1844 and was selected as the first of the bronzes to be edited by the Art Union of London that year.
