Each with a cartouche-shaped central plate within a frame carved and fitted with elaborate mirrored slips and carved with scrolling foliage, each cresting centered by a large foliate clasp and with a base centered by confronting C-scrolls, the plates largely from an earlier 18th Century mirror and re-used

Lot Essay

In their elaborate design, bold proportion, exaggerated rockwork and florid exuberance, these Scottish pier-glasses are closely related to those supplied by William Mathie (fl.1733-60) of Cockenzie to William, 5th Earl of Dumfries for the state rooms at Dumfries House, circa 1759 (Francis Bamford, 'The Scottish Wrights at Dumfries House', Furniture History, vol. IX, 1973, pp. 80-9, pls. 16B-20B)
