Lot Essay

This tricoteuse is based on a group by or attributed to Jean-Henri Riesener (maître in 1768) and Martin Carlin (maître in 1766) including that made by Riesener for Marie Antoinette at St. Cloud, now in the Musée Nissim de Camondo, illustrated in the museum catalogue, 1973, no. 347, p. 73. Another, by Carlin, of even closer form to the present example, the property of Mr. and Mrs. John Balfour, Balbirnie, Fife, Scotland, was sold at Christie's London, 29 June 1972, lot 4.
