Taken from the view of a property on the Sloterweg near Amsterdam, The Landscape with Three Gabled Cottages is compositionally one of the more ambitious of Rembrandt's landscapes taken from nature. The strong interplay of diagonals which the artist has introduced into this composition play up the dramatic effect, which is heightened yet further by the use of heavy drypoint shading and the resultant burr.
