"MY COMPENSATION AS PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES"

A document headed "Form of Receipt," with no amount specified. It is probable that this was a specimen of a form Adams wished to be printed for use in the payment of his Presidential salary. It reads: "Received of Samuel Meredith Treasurer of the United States by the hands of Benjamin Lincoln Collector of Boston [blank] Dollars on amount of my Compensation as President of the United States to the 4 of March 1799 for which I have signed duplicate Receipts..." Provenance: Walter R. Benjamin, 1981.
