PRESIDENT LINCOLN TO THE INVENTOR OF THE DAHLGREN GUN

A request for a review on a new weapon: "If you can find time, please examine Mr. John McAloney's model of a chain-shot, and report on it..." Published in Collected Works, Second Supplement, p. 34. Provenance: Goodspeeds, 1976.

Admiral John Adolph Dahlgren (1809-1870) had invented the Dahlgren gun, a rifled cannon and boat howitzers during his sixteen-year career as an Ordnance officer. He became Chief Ordnance Officer in July 1862, was in charge of the Washington, D.C. Naval Yard (which Lincoln frequently visited) and later commanded the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron. He was promoted to Rear Admiral on 7 February 1863.
