LINCOLN, MARY TODD, First Lady. Autograph letter signed ("Mary Lincoln") as First Lady to Captain [Ulric] Dahlgren, "Executive Mansion," Washington, D.C., circa 1862-1864. 1 page, 8vo, integral blank, personal embossed, lines stationery with bright blue border, formerly backed.
Mrs. Lincoln invites the son of the inventor of the Dahlgren gun to dinner: "Mr. Lincoln, requests me to say to you, that he will be pleased to have you, dine with us, to day, in an informal way, at 4 o'clock..." Unpublished, not in Mary Todd Lincoln: Her Life and Letters, ed. Turner and Turner.
On Dahlgren's father, the Admiral and Chief of Ordnance, see lot XX. Ulric Dahlgren was Chief of Artillery under Siegel at 2nd Bull Run, then aide to Burnside and to Hooker at Chancellorsville. At Gettysburg he was on Meade's staff and lost a leg. Promoted soon after to Colonel of Cavalry, he was killed commanding the ill-fated Kilpatrick-Dahlgren Raid in January 1864.
