The Property of RICHARD FRANCIS PHILLIPS
CLEMENS, SAMUEL LANGHORNE ("Mark Twain"). Autograph letter signed ("S.L. Clemens") to The Chairman & Committee of the City Liberal Club, London, 8 March [1900]. 2 pages, 24mo, on pages 1 and 4 of a four-page sheet, lightly stained, original envelope present. Clemens explains why his writing schedule will prevent him from attending a function: "Gentlemen: I thank you sincerely for the honor of your invitation for March 20, but I must lose my privilege -- not on an account of a previous engagement, but because in my working-season I keep in seclusion in order that the thread of the work may not be broken by too pleasant interruptions, & my interest in it be thereby diminished..." [With:] A certificate for a pageant honoring Twain.
