I can't copy the dictated portion -- I have to save my strength; but it is pretty plainly written...I am going to have a long holiday from writing, now..." -- CLEMENS. Autograph letter signed ("SLC") to "Dear C & W" (his English publishers Chatto & Windus), [New York?] Hotel Metropole, 3 November 1897, 2 pages, 12mo, on black-bordered mourning stationery, two lines on second page rejected and scored through, concerning an illustration in Following the Equator (published in England as More Tramps Abroad): "Bliss's canvassing copy has arrived. In it, fronting Chapter I, is a picture ostensibly representing my tribe [family]. If you have that [cast?], don't use it. Whenever you recognize my wife or daughter in any picture, please squelch that picture. They don't want to appear in the book, of course...I am very much obliged to Mr. Ellis, & will not give out any picture for reproduction..." Together 2 items. (2)
