SYNGE, JOHN MILLINGTON. Autograph letter signed ("J.M. Synge") to "Dear Mr. Sidgwick" [of his English publishers A.H. Bullen?], Dublin, 8 January 1909. 4 pages, 8vo, on black-edge mourning stationery (Synge's mother had died in October), slight fold creases. Regarding publication of his works: "...Our project for a collected edition of my plays in one volume has come to nothing for the present -- in this country at least -- chiefly owning to impossibility of coming to what we thought a satisfactory arrangement with Mr. [Elkin] Mathews...it will be much to my advantage to have all my stuff in the hands of one publisher -- and that publisher will be Maunsel [his Dublin publisher]...I think it will be best to get Maunsel to republish the 'Well of the Saints.' Perhaps at some future time I and Maunsel may be stoned out of Ireland and I may be only too glad to come back to you if you will have me..." Ironically, Synge, suffering from Hodgkin's disease, would enter a Dublin nursing home on 31 January and would die there on 24 March; his letters are rare.
