Inviting (ironically) Thomas to stay with him in California (there had been plans to work on an opera together). On his final trip to America, Thomas landed in New York on 19 October 1953; he went into an alcohol-induced coma on 4 November and died on 9 November. Stravinsky writes: "You must be in New York now and I hope everything is going well for you there. I have not written you until today because I had no news to give you. I spoke to Aldous Huxley but the agent he knows is in New York and therefore could not do better than yours from over there [London]...everybody is anxious to see you and hear you hear, and we should be able to arrange some private affair from which enough money could be draw at least to cover your fare to and from California.
