President Fillmore expresses flowery thanks for "...the honor of...a copy of a resolution passed at a Meeting of the Native Americans [Know-Nothings] of the City and County of Philadelphia...expressing confidence in the present National Administration, & for which I beg to return my thanks. It is unnecessary for me, Gentlemen, to express the gratification I feel at this mark of confidence. The brightest and noblest reward of a public servant -- aside from the approval of his own conscience -- must always be the approbation of his fellow citizens..."

The American Party, founded in 1849 as a secret political society, nominated Fillmore for President in 1856, but were so hopelessly divided over the issue of slavery that Fillmore polled only 22 of the electorate.
