Lot Essay
The present work was painted in 1898 during one of Luce's visits to Charleroi, Belgium where he exhibited frequently from the late 1880s through the 1890s. Encouraged by his friend Camille Pissarro, Luce began to modify the pointillist technique during the 1890s to create a synthesis of both the separate application of pure color with the blended brushwork of the Impressionists.
