AN IMPORTANT LARGE PAINTED WOOD SEATED FIGURE OF A BODHISATTVA 12TH/13TH CENTURY
Shown seated in dhyanamudra, the graceful hands held in amidamudra, with one foot hidden beneath the crisp folds of the skirt, wearing a necklace of flowerheads and a cloud collar which is tucked under the belt in back and from which protrudes the folds of the collar of the undergarment in front, with further foliate jeweled chains draped below the waist and continuing under the feet and over the calves, the arms wrapped with scarves which flare up and outwards in wing- like projections, the full face carved in a contemplative expression and the hair dressed in trailing tresses and a coiled topknot, indentations for an inlaid urna and earrings in the pendulous lobes, the detailed back with three rectangular openings into the hollow interior, traces of gilding and polychrome pigment, some restoration, cracks--46 inches (116.9cm.) high
